Cruise Control Contemporary is pleased to present HOME BODY, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Carpinteria based artist Kim Satomi Hoppe.
Through vivid color and playful imagery, HOME BODY reflects on what it means to create — or long for — a sense of home. And at a time in California when an ability to have a home is being challenged. Hoppe’s paintings are filled with fruits, flowers, and objects that feel both intimate and universal, drawing from personal history while inviting viewers into a shared emotional space of beauty and care.
Born in Idaho, Hoppe’s family history includes her grandmother’s incarceration in a Japanese American camp during World War II — a legacy that subtly informs her work. In response, her paintings become sites of safety, abundance, and tenderness — places where memory and imagination intertwine, and where the body can rest and belong.
In these works, home is not just a physical place but a feeling stitched together through memory, resilience, and imagination. Hoppe’s use of familiar, comforting motifs serves as a quiet act of preservation — a way to hold onto tenderness in the face of uncertainty. Each painting becomes a kind of offering: a reminder that even as landscapes shift and stability wavers, the essence of home can still be cultivated and shared.
“Originally from Boise, Idaho, I studied Interior Design at the University of Idaho before moving to Seattle to work in architecture and residential design. Over time, I was drawn away from the city to the quiet, coastal town of Port Townsend, WA, where I found deeper connection in nature, solitude, and surfing the wild waters of the Pacific Northwest. There, I balanced my creative practice with residential design projects, focusing on small, soulful homes and historic preservation. In 2019, I founded my design studio, Quiet Coast, inspired by simplicity, place, and intention.”
“After twelve years surrounded by the moody greens and grays of Washington, I followed an intuitive pull south to Carpinteria, California — a sun-soaked coastal town rich in vibrant color and expansive energy. With no plan and no connections, I surrendered to the unknown. This transition brought growth, healing, and a profound creative awakening. My work continues to be shaped by landscape, light, and the quiet beauty of everyday life — rooted in a love of home, nature, and soulful design.” -KSH
